What is it?
The app is based on the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) nomenclature. It is used in many fields of chemistry and biochemistry.
What is the IUPAC nomenclature?
In general, a chemical compound is named after its most significant element. This element is then identified by its number. Thus, a compound such as 1,2-dibromoethane is often called 1,2-dibromo-2-ethyl-4-propane (abbreviated to 1,2-dibromo-2-ethyl-4-propane). However, there are some exceptions. For instance, in the field of biochemistry, a compound such as 5-amino-2-pyridone is often called 5-amino-2-pyridone, even though the element that is most significant in this compound is nitrogen.
